SOPHIA FARRELL
AUTISM AWARENESS AMBASSADOR
Sophia is 9 years of age and dances for Lynam School of Irish Dance within An Comhdail.
After only her first entry to provincial competition, Sophia recently won the Leinster Championship title at the U-9 level.
Sophia is proudly Autistic and has several co-morbid conditions connected to her Autism. These include ADHD, severe Sensory Processing Disorder, Anxiety and sleep disorders and more. Sophia is in a special Autistic school setting due to her complex needs.
Despite the huge challenges she faces daily, Sophia loves to do Irish Dance. Under the guidance of her teachers, Sophia has flourished. Their understanding, patience and support have led to Sophia achieving such heights at such a young age.
Since her provincial win, Sophia has spent her time and energy raising awareness and acceptance of Autism and differing abilities in Irish dance. This has led to her being invited to the highest office in Dáil Éireann where she was asked to contribute to the Autism Strategy legislation being rolled out by Government.
Outside of Irish Dance, Sophia has 3 siblings, all of whom are Autistic and in a special school setting. This adds further complexity to Sophia’s life and her ability to stay regulated and focused. However, she is a very determined little girl who wants to share with the world that you can be anything you want to be when you dream and work hard.
